Kids can have ENT problems just like adults. Often, due to a child's limited communication skills, it is necessary to visit an otolaryngologist to properly diagnose and treat a child with ENT problems.
At Ohio ENT, we specialize in treating common and complex pediatric and adolescent ENT issues. These issues include tonsillitis, adenoiditis, ear tubes and ENT surgery.
Ohio ENT’s board-certified Otolaryngologists will work with your child’s pediatrician to coordinate the best care possible.
Common Pediatric Conditions
Allergic Rhinitis
Allergic Rhinitis is a common nasal condition commonly found in young children and young adults. Air borne contaminants such as pet dander, dust and pollen are the major causes of the condition. Children can develop allergic rhinitis from repeated exposure to a stimuli or it can be passed down genetically. The contaminants often cause a runny nose, coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion amd sneezing, itchy or watery eyes. If your child suffers from these symptoms for more than 10-14 days, it may be time to see a physician. An otolaryngologist can diagnose and recommend a variety of treatment plans to help combat allergic rhinitis.
GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease)
Research has shown that there is a high incidence of GERD in infants under the age of 12 months old. If left untreated, GERD can cause health problems with a child's lungs, sinus, ears, teeth, stomach and other areas of their respiratory and digestive tracts. There are a variety of ways an otolaryngologist can diagnose and treat GERD in infants. Click here for more information about GERD in infants.
Pediatric Health Concerns
Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) or Second Hand Smoke
ETS affects children in a variety of ways, and is particularly harmful to a child's ears. Tobacco smoke irritates children's respiratory tracts and also irritates their Eustachian tubes. These tubes connect the nose to the middle ear. When these tubes are inflamed or irritated, they swell and decrease the child's ability to equalize pressure in their middle ear. This can lead to a variety of health problems, including pain, fluid retention in the ear, infection and even hearing loss if an infection is left untreated. Often a child will suffer from a higher frequency and longer duration of ear infections when subjected to second hand smoke.
